Bitconnect, Sadly, Crashes Down

This is a sad, sad tale, but one that’s all too real. Bitconnect – the lending platform that most called a Ponzi scheme – came crashing down yesterday.

Bitconnect Drop

This is nothing to celebrate. Nothing at all.

What Went Wrong?

Whether or not this was a Ponzi scheme is a question folks can debate: Ponzis rely on money from new investors to pay the old investors. Bitconnect certainly had elements of that. Ponzis also make it very tough for you to get out your original investments – and, since the “lending platform” locked down your funds for as many as 299 days, that’s also a pretty telling sign.

However, proponents of Bitconnect – and several remain – will tell you that the coin is in good shape (despite a perceived drop in value of upwards of 90 percent) and that the ICO for their new coin (which will do…what, exactly?) means that they’re poised for great things.

No “We Told You So”

On this site, we went through the “stages of grief” with Bitconnect – and you can visit our Passive Income page to see how that unfolded. First, we thought it was really really cool and continued our experiment. Then, we backed off a little, wondering if it was too good to be true. Finally, a few months back, we made it a point to get our money out (from “lending profits”) every chance we could.

Whether we did or didn’t get back everything we put into it is a question we’ll have to do the math in order to answer.

But, with all of these, we’ve done a “warts and all” experiment on passive income platforms such as these. Sadly, we’re now officially an “oh-fer,” 0-for-10?

Again, Those Caveats

We’re seeing awful stories on the darker corners of the internet: from folks who got in way over their heads, invested more than they could afford to lose, and are now left picking up the pieces.

The caveats in this space need to be repeated, in bold, which we’ll do now:

  • Don’t invest more than you can afford to lose
  • Don’t borrow to invest in cryptocurrency
  • Do your own research
  • Spread out your risk so that you’re not completely reliant on one investment
  • Get legal, tax, and accounting advice from professionals
  • You are responsible for your own success or failure.

Our Next Steps

On this site, we’ll update our own 2018 Crypto Investment Plan – we need to investigate more “Passive Income Programs,” but, to be honest, those will likely include only mining and staking opportunities; any “lending” or “high yield investment program” (HYIP) will likely be a scam and should be avoided.

We’ll also update the Passive Income page to reflect the fact that Bitconnect is a scam.

#DYOR is our favorite hashtag/acronym in crypto. Do Your Own Research. Don’t trust just one site for information about cryptocurrency, don’t rely on just one YouTuber or blogger, and investigate everything. If it looks fishy, it may well be fishy.

Our 2018 Crypto Investment Plan

2018

EDITOR’S NOTE: With the activities of mid-January, such as the sharp pullback of pretty much all coins, plus the crash of Bitconnect, we’ve updated this post on January 17.

Anyone else feel really blessed and ready to make it a phenomenal year?

Frankly, we feel like we hit the ground sprinting in 2018. Part of it was due to a little bit of luck, part of it was due to some planning, and part of it was due to the discipline to just hang tight for a while.

For instance, we made our own luck with a couple of timely picks; we also called ourselves HODLers on at least a couple of occasions – ones where weaker hands might have folded up the tents.

But we screwed up a couple places, too: our first ever trade with DASH meant that we took profits of 25% off the table and closed out our entire interest. Let’s never speak of this again.

Starting with a Bang

My #crypto portfolio is only up 55% since 12/31.

— Dave Van de Walle (@Area224) January 4, 2018

We’ve gone on and on about Risk Management here. And we also feel that we’ve experimented at least enough with some concepts – you can read a whole bunch more over at the Passive Income page on this site – to at least have a firm understanding of what could work, what won’t work, and what things are worth our time.

Finally, we think we’ve gotten a good chunk of knowledge from some others on the web – especially “Crypto Twitter,” which has been a wonderful world for us so far (with thanks to some characters like @BambouClub, @crazy_crypto, @haydentiff, and @BryceWeiner, who all share their approaches to coins and tokens and various crypto ecosystems – and all bring rather distinctive POVs).

It was BambouClub himself who challenged us to put a plan to paper – and stick to it. We had the plan to paper part sketched out – but we needed to formalize it and put it in writing.

And the “stick to it” thing we’re also going to TRY to do. More to come on that…

Enough Background: SHARE THE PLAN!!!

Behold, our 2018 Crypto Investment Plan. With the usual caveats:

  • This is not individual advice
  • Invest at your own risk
  • Seek professional help for things like taxes, accounting, legal, and the like
  • “DYOR” – if you learned one acronym last year, it’s that one. Do Your Own Research.

Let’s get started with the $1,250,000 question:

Should BRED Be Part of Your Plan?

How quickly can we answer that with a resounding YES?

If you read our post from New Year’s Day, you know how well you would have done with BRED – that combo of Bitcoin, Ripple’s XRP token, Ethereum, and Dash – to the tune of wild, crazy, insane returns from buying and holding for one whole year.

BRED 2017

This was, and still is, probably as close to a Bitcoin Mutual Fund as you can get. But, for 2018, it needed to be tweaked, to accommodate for a couple things, including main Bitcoin forks, the Ethereum fork from more than a year ago, and the crazy returns from Ripple (meaning that you are buying fewer XRP tokens than you had a year ago, because they’ve gone from penny stock to blue chip holding rather quickly). Hence:

2018 BRED Allocation
Reweighted to start the new year

We’ll answer the “how much?” question a little later; but now that the overall yes/no question on BRED is settled, we probably need to agree on an altcoin strategy, too: everything down the totem pole that could make sense to be part of the mix.

What About the Altcoins?

Our approach to altcoins isn’t random – we spent most of 2017 learning which sorts of projects appealed to us, and which ones had the potential to turn into something that replicates the success of the BRED portfolio. They’re somewhat diverse – big and small, different kinds of projects – and, as you can see from this chart, they also run the gamut from multi-billion-dollar projects to tiny-but-poised. Here’s a snapshot of our eight coins – but remember to DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH.

Alt Portfolio

As we revisit some of the highlights and lowlights from 2017, we know that our biggest mistakes were when we chased quick returns and weren’t in love with the project. In these cases, we think these projects have tremendous potential, and it’s likely a rather diverse enough group to spread out our risk.

And we lucked out on a couple: ADA and HTML have both gone up at least 5 times since we bought in, and TRX was a gift courtesy of a Binance airdrop, so we held on and bought more.

Where we think we might see some real growth, though, is toward the bottom of the list. We’ve held COSS for long enough to be officially called #HODLers – “Hold On for Dear Life” – and our stake has allowed us to realize gains on a USD basis from Bitcoin’s price spike. And BURST has us so crazy excited: we were working on a blog post IN JUNE about the potential for that coin…before all of its developments.

There needs to be room in the portfolio for more, though. Let’s briefly address Passive Income next.

Our Changing Passive Income Approach

Well, the breaking news as we update this post goes as follows:

Bitconnect Scam

We took some lumps and lost some BTC (and ETH, and even some LTC) investing in passive income programs that went belly up. One saving grace: we have investigated mining and staking, and that’s where our Passive Income for 2018 will take us.

Genesis Mining will be where re reinvest in this category, and we’ll also invest in coins where there’s passive interest that pays – like HTMLCoin, for instance – and also check out inexpensive mining for coins like BURST.

There’s one more bucket, but what do we call it and what do we use it for?

Take A Flier, Please

We were able to confirm on Investopedia that we’re using the term correctly, so we’re calling this category “Fliers.” This includes:

  • Coins that we invested in, lost interest in, but didn’t totally get rid of (LBRY is one)
  • ICOs or other projects that are either thinly traded or haven’t fully launched (Exscudo, POW)
  • Airdrops (we’re still finding coins that we were granted that…maybe might be good projects eventually)
  • “Others” – serving as a catch-all term for anything else that doesn’t fit neatly into a category.

We now have four different buckets – so it’s time to figure out the right allocation for each.

Here It Is: Our 2018 Crypto Investment Plan

18 Portfolio

Let us explain what’s going on here. We decided to allocate in more of a “barbell strategy” – heavily weighted toward core coins on one side (40% BRED) and toward alts on the other (the 40% Alts category). The “Target” column is the amount we want to see our allocations get to – but, as you can see in the “3-Jan” column, in some respects we have a ways to go.

Coins that we specifically hope to make up ground with we’ve highlighted in pink: we will add where we can, either through profits on something like Bitconnect, or, if we end up with an extreme winner, taking some profits from that coin or token.

Right now, we need to reweight a little away from Alts (59%) and toward BRED (22%); we also know that the Fliers are not an exact science, since some of those airdrops aren’t worth much – but could be worth a ton someday – and others don’t hit the market for a bit, so pricing guesstimations are just that. (In those cases, by the way, we have simply used the value of the investments we’ve made as the value of the coin right now. Exscudo, for instance, claimed to sell at an equivalent of $2, so we calculated the BTC price and offset that for any re-distribution of tokens that occurred later.)

Why They’re “Goals”

We agreed to put this on paper, but we also didn’t want to upset the apple cart. That’s why we’re calling them goals: we aim to get our overall crypto portfolio as close to the weighting as we can by February 1.

But we also give ourselves the leeway to make changes as we see fit. For instance, TRX cannot possibly sustain its run, can it? XRP can’t have anywhere near the run it had last year, could it? And so on, and so forth: while we don’t think we’ll deviate from BRED, we might make a change or two to the Alt portion of the portfolio.

And we can’t be held to a strict “40-40-10-10” formula. (If, in theory, we did that in 2017 with BRED but decided to reallocate each quarter, who’s to say what that would have done to our approach?)

Our Suggestion For You…

Again, this is not individual advice, and seek the counsel of those wise folks in your spheres of influence.

However, this has been a great exercise for us, the act of getting things on paper. We’ve questioned a couple of our own assumptions, and we’ve also had to ask ourselves just how much risk we want to shoulder.

In this vein, we think we’re prepared for 2018, come what may.

We’d love to hear your thoughts.

Coinreum, Hexabot, and Bitconnect – Updates on Three Passive Income Platforms

Well, after an active weekend of craziness around Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash, we thought we’d instead focus on Passive Income Platforms that we’ve talked about on the site quite a bit. Today, a brief post about three of them – two new, one not-so-new – and the future of these PIPs.

It’s also time for our regular warning: while we’re happy to experiment on these sites, don’t “invest” more than you can afford to lose. If you send Bitcoin or any other coin to a site with the promise of real huge returns, caution should rule the day. To us, $50 or so worth of Bitcoin or Ethereum or another coin is a fine starting point – and we consider that money gone the second it is sent. (This also keeps us from sending large amounts: it’s going into a black hole.)

With that aside, here’s our take on three such platforms: Coinreum, Hexabot, and Bitconnect.

Coinreum – AVOID. DON’T INVEST.

We’ve pulled the ads for Coinreum, and won’t put them back up. Why?

Well, while it appears to be legit – if you judge its semi-ubiquitous ad campaigns as signs of legitimacy – it has all the signs of the other scams we’ve witnessed:

  • Pretty audacious returns in a short time (total cumulative returns of 150% on up for just a few weeks of “investment”)
  • A lot of emails telling you things like “you have a new accrual!”
  • But no payouts for us yet. None.

In addition, their Twitter handle disappeared over the weekend. That, to us, is the beginning of the end.

As with all of these, it’s an experiment – we’re out a little bit of ETH, but we’re also playing with house money, so we’re happy to take one for the team.

Coinreum: AVOID. DON’T INVEST.

Hexabot – We’re Cautiously Optimistic

We sent a little bit over to the Hexabot site, which our buddy Travis first told us about in this interview. Here’s our AFFILIATE LINK: Hexabot.

We sent so little that we have yet to reach the threshold where we have enough to withdraw; that will tell you how close we are to actually calling ourselves “whales.” Ha!

We’ll keep you posted.

Bitconnect – Is It Legit?

That’s a variation on the number one question we get here: “Is Bitconnect a Ponzi Scheme?”

Folks behind Bitconnect counter with a video, which Travis sent to us and we’re sharing here.

To wit, the video tells us:

  • The CEO of Bitconnect Ltd does not exist
  • Bitconnect is now a “Plc” as opposed to a LLC
  • Any rumors that the company is going out of business are not true, per the video’s creator, since they’re just changing the way the company is structured.

That being said, we’re still recommending it – and you can learn about our experiences here: 99 Days of Bitconnect – but, as with anything else, use some serious judgment with any of these platforms. With Bitconnect…

  • Unless you’re a big spender, your deposits are locked down for as many as 299 days
  • In order to achieve the massive compounding some folks talk about, you’ll need to reinvest each $10 in interest earned and do so regularly BUT…
  • Each of those reinvestments starts another 299 day clock.

In other words, you could build a really huge stack of Bitconnect money, then, if the site disappears next year, you may see absolutely none of it. It’s always a risk.

Again, We’re Experimenting

Passive income is like this: you don’t know what works until you find out what works. Your experience may vary. Past performance does not indicate future results.

One last thing: get some POW Tokens, will ya? They’re free – if you use this link we’ll get some, too, but it’s a unique project and the airdrop is still going on.

99 Days of Bitconnect

UPDATED ON NOVEMBER 2 – Bitconnect is still cool, but we’re striking through all the text about Bitpetite, which is a scam.

Here on the site, we’ve talked quite a bit about the concept of “Passive Income,” and, specifically, Passive Income Platforms (PIPs) where you can invest your coins or tokens and watch them make money for you.

We’ve also tried to be as upfront and transparent as possible. This approach, we think, lets us share with you a “warts and all” look at these PIPs and whether or not they might be worth your hard-earned Bitcoins.

Bithaul
Bithaul is a SCAM.

We started our journey with Bitconnect (AFFILIATE LINK), and we’ve also tried a couple duds – “scams” is actually more accurate – like Bithaul (the image over there is what they SAY we have in our account right now, though we haven’t been able to withdraw for almost a month), or Control Finance (another dead site), or Ambis (SCAM).

(The only other platform that we’ve tried and can still vouch for is Bitpetite (AFFILIATE LINK), which continues to have a great track record for us. And we promise to try more of these in the days to come, with a report on them as we proceed.)  Bitpetite is a SCAM.

Bitconnect remains the leader for us because of a couple of factors:

  • It is backed by an actual coin;
  • That coin has a large market cap;
  • There is a wide distribution, throughout the world, of Bitconnect users;
  • The track record of payouts is pretty strong (see chart below).

99 Days In…

Okay, the image we’re about to share will take a little scrolling on your part. It’s a screenshot of our Excel spreadsheet that tracks the amount of interest paid each day we’ve been part of the Bitconnect system. SO it’s 99 days of history, going back to July 10, when we got started. Let’s take a look:

Before we psychoanalyze this spreadsheet, we should probably give you a refresher on the basics.

  • For instance, you need to invest a minimum of $100 to get started. You need to convert Bitcoin into BCC, their coin, and then invest a round number in an increment of $10. We landed on $110 to get started because of exchange rates and whatnot on the day we invested.
  • $10 is a pretty important number for the site, too, because you can only reinvest in multiples of $10.
  • You are given the option to cash out your interest whenever; but we have chosen to reinvest it at each step of the way.
  • Since we’re not “whales” on the site – at least not yet – our investments and reinvestments are locked down for 299 days; to get your money back sooner, you will need to invest a minimum of $1010.

We’ve tried to manage this spreadsheet so that it’s obvious to us when we reach a milestone: the “Reinvest” column is highlighted when we reinvest into the system. Another key milestone for us was September 14: that’s the date we took some affiliate commissions from Bitpetite (AFFILIATE LINK; you, too, can sign up and get affiliates on the site and get commissions should you so choose) and invested them into Bitconnect. (That’s why the upper right corner, where it says “initial investments,” reads “$310.”) (ALSO, ignore the “Today’s Total” figure; we’ll fix once the coffee consumption is at normal levels.)

Pluses and Minuses

One thing you’ll need to consider here: are you better off parking some of your coins somewhere (like Bitconnect) or just keeping them in Bitcoins and doing nothing.

This is a legitimate question – we look at our own approach as “risk management” and we aren’t planning on putting all of our eggs in any one basket. Still…

This chart shows the Bitcoin price on July 10 – the day we got started on Bitconnect – and tells us that we would have also done well had we just taken $110 worth of Bitcoin and parked it in Bitcoin. At today’s price of around $5640, that’s more than a 132% return.

BUT, if you see look at our Excel chart above, you’ll see that we did just as well, in a shorter time frame, with our original investment; $110 had turned into $260 on Sept 13, the day before we dropped another $200 into the platform.

In addition to the other concerns that you should have with any Bitcoin-related investment – that you could lose your entire principal, that the site could disappear on you, that you’ll invest your time and money in something you’re better off avoiding – another concern is whether you are better off with the core coins (like our BRED Portfolio) as opposed to these passive income platforms.

This is a legitimate question – might end up being a “minus” in the grand scheme – if you take some of those Bitcoin estimates that are floating around and tease them out. For instance, one prognosticator we found on the internet made a semi-legitimate case for Bitcoin to hit $27,000 at some point in early 2018. By then, our original Bitconnect investment would be worth around $1500, but would pale in comparison to the same amount just parked in Bitcoin (which would quintuple in Q1 2018).

As Always, Watch Your Eggs

The multi-basket, disciplined approach is a good one; and there’s also something to be said for the fact that parking your Bitcoins at Bitconnect actually parks them for 299 days. It’s not like there’s a “substantial penalty for early withdrawal,” since there is, more accurately, “no possibility of early withdrawal.”

So we should summarize the same way we summarize all of our discussions of these platforms: Do Your Own Research, don’t invest more than you can afford to lose, manage your risk appropriately, and…good luck.

Getting Started (Redux)

Several weeks ago, we posted a few ideas to get you started with cryptocurrency. You know, Bitcoin, Ethereum, and some of the other coins and tokens that we discuss on this here forum.

We thought that we’d spend some time today revisiting that idea: How Do You Get Started?

Our goal today is AN ACTIONABLE LIST. A few things to possibly whet your appetite.

We have a few ideas below – and, since this continues to be an experiment, some of the links are going to be different from the last time we did this. As usual, we’ll include a few AFFILIATE LINKS with this post (so we may be compensated if you take some sort of action, like signing up, buying currency, or investing) and we’ll be as blatant as we possibly can when we share one.

Let’s begin.

An Airdrop and This Will Cost You NOTHING

We talked about this “airdrop” last week and it’s still going on. Here’s a link to the POW Token webpage. Simply put, you sign up with your Facebook credentials and the token creators give you a bunch of tokens (or coins).

We have been asked “Why Are They Doing This?” and the best answer to that is that there’s value in a widely distributed network. While the creators make some…interesting…claims on their web page, there is something to the fact that a network with a million people using its product will be much more valuable in the long term than a network with just 30,000 users (which is where it stands today).

For now, think of this as a Western US land grab, and you’re putting stakes in the ground and hoping that it becomes fertile farmland in the future.

Coinbase – STILL the Fastest Way to Get Started

This one will cost you money, but one of the beautiful things about Coinbase (AFFILIATE LINK) is that, for Americans at least, there’s a decent amount of seamless integration between traditional banking and this new economy. The AFFILIATE LINK gives you a $10 bonus (paid in Bitcoin) if you spend $100 on any combination of the three currencies they offer (Bitcoin, Ethereum, or Litecoin). (And once you join in, you’ll get your own link and can invite others yourself and possibly be compensated…which is cool with us.)

Trade Coins on an Exchange

While there are a few established exchanges that we’d suggest – Bittrex, Cryptopia (AFFILIATE LINK) and Poloniex are three that we currently use – you should also consider signing up for one of the newer exchanges, too.

  • Altcoin Exchange (AFFILIATE LINK) may very well be lucrative for you – we know that other exchanges that started this way (through referrals) compensated their early adopters rather richly. Use our AFFILIATE LINK over there, and then start referring others yourself as you see fit.
  • WCX  (AFFILIATE LINK) is another one, with an ICO coming in a few weeks.
  • COSS is brand new. Not an affiliate link, but we do like the fact it’s based in Singapore and has developers throughout the world.

Passive Income Platforms

Yes, we have been talking A LOT about Passive Income Platforms, or PIPs, that can help you profit with limited amounts of effort. We currently recommend two of them – that’s not to say there aren’t others that are worth your time and investment, but these are the two that we (1) have experimented with and (2) have not let us down.

DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH! Seriously, with any of these, your coins could end up in a black hole of nothing. Don’t invest more than you can afford to lose.

  • Bitconnect (AFFILIATE LINK) is beautiful, we think, because it is backed by an actual coin, one that has a large market cap (as of this writing, around $1 Billion). The odds of it disappearing are small.
  • Bitpetite (AFFILIATE LINK) acts more like a mining platform, in that your “investment” will not be returned to you. However, we now have a nine-week track record of daily payments from the site; note that payments are larger during weekdays than weekends.

An Actionable List?

That’s our hope. You can spend a couple minutes on the first one and it costs you nothing, then, if you’re ready to invest some real money, you can consider trying the other ones out.

In any event, don’t invest more than you can afford to lose…once you get started in this world, it might get a little addictive.
